{"id":735,"date":"2014-12-29T17:54:42","date_gmt":"2014-12-29T17:54:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamiebrightmore.com\/?p=735"},"modified":"2015-01-31T17:02:59","modified_gmt":"2015-01-31T17:02:59","slug":"magic-lantern-custom-crop-marks-black-white","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamiebrightmore.com\/photography\/magic-lantern-custom-crop-marks-black-white\/","title":{"rendered":"Magic Lantern Custom Crop Marks (Black or White)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.magiclantern.fm\/\">Magic Lantern<\/a> allows you to create custom crop marks which are overlaid on your live view screen. This can be incredibly useful for all sorts of photography, timelaspe, and filmmaking work.<\/p>\n<p>I really wanted to be able to have <em>white<\/em> crop marks for night work where the subject is darker. After hours of tinkering I finally figured out a way to do it, just follow the instructions carefully and you will nail this. I\u2019ve included some demo files.<\/p>\n<p>I ran into issues getting the <a href=\"http:\/\/magiclantern.wikia.com\/wiki\/Cropmarks \">original cropmarks tutorial<\/a> instructions to work for me, possibly as I was working in Illustrator first. I\u2019ll leave the RLE compression part out of this tutorial as it works just fine, you can refer to that in the previous link (my example files contain the RLE app).<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully this will save you a ton of time either way.<\/p>\n<p>First step, download the Magic Lantern Custom Crop Marks example files&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"downloads\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.4muladesign.com\/clients\/jb\/downloads\/JB_ML_Custom_Cropmarks_Tutorial_Files.zip\">Download my Example Files<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<p><strong>Nb<\/strong>. I always make my custom crop marks in Illustrator, but you\u2019ll need to process the artwork\u00a0in Photoshop afterwards. Of course, you can skip Illustrator and just you Photoshop if you like, just remember to use shape layers \/\u00a0switch off anti-aliasing. These instructions pertain to using Mac OS X Yosemite with the latest Adobe CC apps, although I can\u2019t imagine you\u2019d have any issues using any versions of Photoshop and Illustrator.<\/p>\n<h2>Illustrator<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Illustrator and create a new 720 x 480 document. Make sure your Document Colour Mode is se to RGB.<\/li>\n<li>Create a new layer and add\u00a0a white rectangle, the same dimensions as the document, to act as a background for precise positioning. Lock the layer.<\/li>\n<li>Create a second layer and design your custom crop marks layout using 2px width black lines. You can use 1px, but the lines will be slight. 2px lines show up much better.<\/li>\n<li>Once complete, unlock\u00a0the first background layer and copy\u00a0all your vector art, including the white background layer, into the clipboard using\u00a0&#8216;Select All&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Photoshop<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Create a new 720 x 480 RGB document.<\/li>\n<li>Paste your\u00a0vector artwork from the clipboard and choose &#8216;Smart Object&#8217; and before committing \/ placing, ensure you <strong>uncheck<\/strong> &#8216;Anti-alias&#8217; in Photoshop&#8217;s top bar\u00a0<em>(fig.1)<\/em>. If you don&#8217;t do this, things will not look right.<\/li>\n<li>From the \u2018Image\u2019 menu, choose &#8216;Mode &gt; Indexed Colour\u2019 and flatten the layers.<\/li>\n<li>Next to \u2018Forced&#8217; choose \u2018Custom\u2019 then \u2018Load\u2019 and choose: for <em>White<\/em> crop marks: \u2018MLColortable_White.act\u2019 (Palette with show \u2018Exact&#8217;) <em>(fig.2 &amp; 3)<\/em>, for <em>Black<\/em> crop marks: \u2018MLColortable_Black.act\u2019 (Palette will show \u2018Local Selective&#8217;)*<\/li>\n<li>Choose &#8216;Save As&#8217;\u00a0and select the\u00a0BMP format : File Format \u2018Windows\u2019, Depth \u20198 Bit&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul class=\"blockgrid small-block-grid-1 medium-block-grid-3 large-block-grid-3 \">\n<li>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jamiebrightmore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/cropmarks_fig11-500x500.jpg\" alt=\"Magic Lantern Custom Cropmarks\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption>fig.1<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jamiebrightmore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/cropmarks_fig2-500x500.jpg\" alt=\"Magic Lantern Custom Crop Marks \" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption>fig.2<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jamiebrightmore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/cropmarks_fig3-500x500.jpg\" alt=\"Magic Lantern Custom Crop Marks \" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption>fig.3<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>RLE compression<\/h2>\n<p>You must use the compression tool, follow the instructions here: <a href=\"http:\/\/magiclantern.wikia.com\/wiki\/Cropmarks \">http:\/\/magiclantern.wikia.com\/wiki\/Cropmarks<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Load onto your SD card<\/h2>\n<p>Finally, make sure you rename your custom crop mark files by removing the <em>.rle<\/em>\u00a0suffix so they read <em>.bmp<\/em>\u00a0before dropping them\u00a0into your Magic Lantern SD card\/s under:<br \/>\nSD card root &gt; ML &gt; cropmarks<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ve tested this process several times so I know it works well.
